How Should Gym Leggings Fit? A Simple Guide
Updated 24 September 2026
Short answer: Workout leggings should fit close and firm without you having to think about them. The waist stays in place when you sit down and bend over, the fabric is dense enough not to turn see-through in a deep squat, the seams run straight along the leg and the length ends at the ankle without bunching. If they slide down, they are too big. If the waistband rolls, digs in or the fabric turns see-through, they are too small.
You can tell a pair of leggings fits right when you forget you are wearing them. They shape and support, move with you through every movement and stay in place from the first exercise to the walk home. Here is how to check, part by part.
How do I know if my leggings fit right?
| Fit right | Too small | Too big | |
|---|---|---|---|
| The waist | Stays in place, two fingers slip inside the waistband | Digs in or rolls down | Slides down |
| The fabric | Opaque in a squat | Turns see-through over thighs and seat | Wrinkles on the thighs and behind the knees |
| The seams | Run straight along the leg | Can twist | Wander around the leg |
How should the waist fit?
The waist should stay against the body without rolling down or digging in. A high, wide waist gives the most support and stays in place through the whole session, while a narrow waistband lets go more easily. More in leggings that stay up.
In our full-length leggings we use no elastic band. The waist is shaped in double fabric. It gives structure, supports the stomach and holds you in comfortably, and it does not chafe or pinch. When you sit down, it never feels like it takes your breath away. That is how a waist should feel.

How dense should the fabric be?
Dense enough not to turn see-through when you bend over. Stand in front of the mirror and do a deep squat. If your skin shows through, the fabric is too thin or the size too small. More on that in how to avoid see-through leggings.
Our Edge Stripe Leggings, Goldline Black Sculpting Leggings and Slimline Sculpting Leggings are squat proof. At the same time the fabric is soft and supple against the skin, and it is that combination that makes you want to wear them all day.
How should leggings fit at the back?
They should lie close and shape, without pulling in or sagging. The seams should run straight along the leg and not twist around the thigh when you walk. On sculpting leggings the seams are placed to lift and shape the seat, and you see it straight away in the mirror.
“Honestly, is this my bum? Fantastic design and fits so beautifully.” Malin, on Slimline Sculpting Leggings
How long should workout leggings be?
Full-length leggings should reach the ankle without bunching into folds. Folds at the ankle mean the length or the size is not right. Measure your inside leg, from the crotch down to the ankle bone, and compare with the size guide. If you are tall, read leggings for tall women.

How do you put on leggings the right way?
Put them on like a pair of tights, a little at a time. Ease the fabric upwards bit by bit, over the calf, knee and thigh, until the waist sits where it should. Then every seam and every line falls into place, and the leggings fit exactly the same hour after hour, whatever you do. If you tug and yank at them, you never get the fit they are sewn for.
Take hold of the fabric at the front and back, never at the sides. On Slimline FlexFlow, Goldline and Slimline the piping runs along the outside of the leg. It is sewn with needle and thread and should not take the strain when you pull.
Never pull on the mesh. Edge Mesh has mesh panels at the sides. If you pull on the mesh with a finger, you can make a hole right through it.
Our leggings are designed with seams, panels and details, not with printed patterns. That is why they lift and shape, and why they deserve a little care when you put them on.
How do I test the fit?
Pull the leggings up properly once. Then do a few deep squats, two lunges per leg and a short walk, ideally up a flight of stairs. The leggings should move with you through every movement, keep their shape and stay in place without a single adjustment. If they manage that, they fit right. Measurements and advice are in the leggings size guide.
Frequently asked questions
How tight should workout leggings be?
Close and firm, but never digging in. The support should come from the fabric and the cut, not from the leggings being too small.
How do I know if my leggings are too small?
The waistband digs in or rolls down, or the fabric turns see-through over the thighs and seat when you bend over.
How do I know if my leggings are too big?
They slide down and form wrinkles on the thighs, behind the knees and at the ankle.
High or low waist?
A high, wide waist holds best and gives the most support. The difference is explained in high waist or mid-rise.
How do you put on leggings with mesh?
A little at a time, like a pair of tights. Take hold of the fabric at the front and back and never pull on the mesh, since it can tear.
Should workout leggings cover the ankle?
Full-length leggings should end at the ankle without bunching into folds. If you want a shorter length, there are cropped leggings.
The right fit does not feel like anything special, and that is the whole point. The piece does the job, you do the session. Anything but ordinary.
