Zip-up training jacket: our review before you buy

A zip-up training jacket is rarely worn only for training. It goes to the gym, stays on for the walk, lies over a matching set on a trip and sometimes replaces the cardigan through a working day. So a review should cover more than how the jacket looks in a product photo. What we look at is the shape after many washes, the movement in the shoulders and how the zip feels on the morning you are in a hurry.

The zip is not a small detail. It decides how quickly you can regulate warmth between sets, how clean the front looks when the jacket is closed, and how the piece falls when you wear it half open. Together with fit, fabric and seams, it is the review itself.

What should I look at first?

The shoulders. A training jacket should sit close to the body without holding it. Reach your arms overhead, rotate your torso, bring your arms forward as if you were holding a pair of dumbbells. If the hem rolls up, if it pulls across the shoulder blades, or if the fabric gathers along the zip, the jacket becomes a piece that stays in the wardrobe.

Close to the body does not mean tight. The fabric should follow the movement and then return to its shape. Recovery is what decides, not how soft the jacket feels the first time you try it. For a more defined silhouette the construction matters just as much: seams placed with intent, shaped side panels and lines that do something for the body rather than simply decorate.

How do I know the zip will last?

It should run evenly with one hand, the whole way, without catching in the fabric. Close it fully and look at the front. A straight, stable line means the slider and the fabric are working together. A front that bulges changes both fit and feel. A soft guard at the neck is most noticeable during a warm-up and on the way home.

A two-way zip suits you if you want to open from the bottom over leggings with a high waist. That does not automatically make it the better choice. An ordinary zip is lighter and simpler when the cut is already made for movement. On Edge Training Jacket Gold Zip the gold metallic zip sits centred at the front, and on Iconic Training Jacket G2 the zips at the sides are custom-made with the collection's pattern in black and gold.

Which size should I choose?

The size guide is a starting point. After that, use decides. If you want to wear the jacket as a close mid-layer over a sports bra or a thin top, a close size works. If you need room for a long-sleeved top underneath, or want a quieter silhouette on travel days, choose more width.

The sleeve should allow full mobility without gathering at the inner elbow. A slightly longer sleeve feels well dressed, but it should not fall over the hand and interfere with your grip. Length is a question of proportion. A shorter jacket gives a sharper line with Sculpting Leggings, a longer style more coverage for walks and layering. What matters is that the top and the bottom are designed to work together.

What does the mirror say, and what does the movement say?

Try the jacket half open as well. Many wear it that way after a session and on a walk. The front should fall neatly and keep its shape rather than folding outwards. That is often where the difference shows between a piece that only gets through the training and one that gets through the day.

What should the fabric handle?

A soft fabric gives a good first impression. Quality shows after washing, after packing and after a whole autumn of wear. The fabric needs to move moisture, stretch in several directions and keep its hold without feeling airless. At the same time the surface should stay smooth enough for an ordinary day with sneakers and a coat.

Our Edge and Iconic jackets are sewn in recycled ECO Circle polyester, moisture-repellent and quick-drying. Edge Black Training Jacket has 4-way stretch and a cut that is close enough to sculpt and relaxed enough to wear all day. Where the material comes from still does not tell you on its own how long the jacket will last. Look at whether the fabric returns after stretch, whether the seams lie flat and whether the panels sit where the movement actually happens.

Choose the weight by use. A lighter fabric suits intense sessions, travel and days when the jacket sits under a coat. A denser quality gives more structure for warm-ups and long walks. If you want the same precision in a softer piece, there is Edge Half Zip Sweatshirt, with a gold metallic half zip and an intentionally loose cut that can be tied at the front.

How do I read customer reviews?

The reviews that help most describe situations. That the jacket stayed put during strength training. That it worked on a flight. That the shape was still there after washing. A general rating says less. Look for patterns around size, sleeve length, how the fabric feels and how the zip behaves over time.

Compare the writer's needs with your own as well. Someone who runs often wants a thinner, more pared-back piece. Someone who goes from the gym to lunch appreciates more shape and a denser fabric. Fit is personal. A close cut is chosen by how you want to move in it, not by the size you usually buy.

When does the jacket become part of the wardrobe?

When it carries more than one context. Over a matching set before a session, with relaxed trousers on a Saturday, as a well-cut layer on a trip. A clean front, a zip that runs quietly, panels in the right places and a fabric that returns to its shape. Then the jacket is not the first thing you take off when the session ends.

If you want to compare more styles, they are gathered in our Training Jackets. And if you want to go through the details in order before you decide, we have written about seven details that decide when you choose a training jacket.

That is the balance we work with. Scandinavian sense of form and athletic precision in one piece. Anything but ordinary.
