Five ways to wear a training jacket
A training jacket deserves more than the forty minutes between changing room and shower. Get the cut right and it becomes a piece you keep on. Here are five ways to wear a training jacket, and what the fit has to do for them to work.
What decides whether the jacket gets worn?
Length, shoulder seam, collar and where the panels sit. Those four decide how the piece falls and how easily the rest of the outfit builds around it. Fabric and zip come after.
A jacket that sits too loose feels unwieldy in movement. One that sits too close takes the room you need when a layer goes underneath. Between the two there is a construction that holds its line without turning stiff. That is the one you are looking for.
1. With a set in the same shade
A clean route is together with leggings and a top in the same colour. The line runs unbroken from shoulder to ankle, and you do not think about the outfit again until you change. Our workout sets are put together for exactly that.
Sculpting Leggings with a high waist meet the lower edge of the jacket and create a clear proportion. If you want a layer that shows the set underneath, leave the zip half open over a sports top. Closed, the same jacket reads more pared back. Small adjustment, different feeling.
2. As a light outer layer on the walk
The walk rarely calls for warmth. It calls for shelter from the wind and something that holds the whole together. Iconic Training Jacket G2 has a wide ribbed waistband that stays put while the rest of the jacket falls loose, and zip pockets at the sides for keys and phone. The fabric is moisture-repellent and quick-drying in recycled ECO Circle polyester.
Keep the rest quiet. Black leggings, neutral shoes, the jacket closed to the collar when the wind turns. That carries the whole way, including when the walk ends in a café.
3. Against something wider
A close-cut jacket turns urban when it meets a piece that falls wider. Straight trousers, dark denim with a high waist, joggers with weight in the fabric. The contrast between the precise top half and the easier bottom half is what makes the outfit.
Length governs proportion. A shorter jacket lifts high-waisted trousers and lengthens the legs. A longer one settles more calmly over narrower trousers. Which is right depends on what you want the silhouette to say, not on a rule.
4. First into the suitcase
Travel makes two demands at once: hours in the same position, and a collected look when you step out. Slimline Training Jacket is tailored from shoulder to hip with black side panels that give a soft hourglass shape, and a hidden inner pocket with a flap for cards and keys. The fabric is recycled polyester with 4-way stretch.
Tone on tone under the jacket gives a finished outfit straight off the train. When you need more warmth you put a coat over the top without the jacket building volume.
5. At home, with shape
Home does not have to mean random. Goldline Training Jacket has contoured gold lines that accentuate the waist and a polished gold metallic zip at the front. Worn over soft trousers in the same shade, an ordinary Wednesday takes a clearer shape. The rest of the loungewear follows the same thought.
If you want to be ready to move without changing, sculpting tights work underneath. Pull the zip up part way and fold the collar down lightly for something softer. Close it fully when you want the clean line.
How should a training jacket fit?
The shoulder seam should meet the natural end of the shoulder and stay there when you bring your arms forward. The sleeve should give room to move and still finish near the wrist. Try three things in front of the mirror: stretch your arms straight up, pull the zip all the way, sit down.
Think about the layers you actually wear, too. If the jacket mostly goes over a sports bra and a top, a close fit is enough. If it goes over a long-sleeved sweater, you need a few centimetres more across chest and back. A piece should not ask you to plan the day around it.
More details to look for are in our guide to choosing a training jacket, and if you want to read more about the layers outside the session, we have written about the sports jacket in everyday wear. The full selection sits under training jackets.
Five ways, one jacket. That is roughly how we think when we draw them.
