Guide to functional workout sets: what makes a set worth wearing often

A workout set should not need adjusting between sets, feel wrong when the pace picks up or only work in front of the mirror. This guide to functional workout sets is about choosing pieces that keep their fit, follow the movement and look dressed from the gym to the rest of the day.

A considered set is more than two pieces in the same colour. When leggings, top and jacket are drawn to work together, the silhouette gets calmer, the fit more coherent and the choice easier on an early morning. The combination of function, construction and shape decides whether the set becomes the one you reach for most, or the one left in the drawer.

What movement does the set need to handle?

The most functional set is not the most technical one on paper. It is the one that works for your training, your everyday and how you want to feel in it. For strength and gym you need leggings with a high sculpted waist and a fabric that stays put in squats, lunges and deadlifts. For walks, errands and travel the same base is right, but then the jacket and a more covering top matter more.

Think too about how often you change setting. If you go straight from the session to lunch, pick-up or work from home, a set with clean lines and few details is a practical choice. An all-black set is a restrained base. Tone on tone gives a more coherent look without feeling overworked. Function is as much about the pieces fitting into your life and cutting down on changes as it is about moisture-wicking and stretch.

How should the fit feel?

The leggings should sit close to the body without limiting hip, knee or stomach. A high waist gives a stable feel and an even transition to the top, especially in sessions with a lot of bending and rotation. But height is not everything. The construction of the waistband, the recovery of the fabric and the placement of the seams decide whether the waist stays where it should.

Try it in motion, not just standing. Sit down, do a couple of squats, stretch your arms over your head. Do the leggings slide down? Does the waistband roll? Does the top ride up so you have to fix it? Small disturbances get big after an hour.

Sculpting is a design choice, not a body promise. Seams laid to lift the silhouette, shaped side panels and balanced lines give the piece structure and follow the direction of the body. The difference shows in how the leggings sit after many wears: considered, not just tight.

How the jacket should sit

The jacket should give freedom of movement over the shoulders and keep its shape when closed. The zip should lie flat, the collar feel comfortable and the sleeves work when you reach, carry or cycle. A fitted style with panels in the right places becomes a clear layer over the set and works with jeans and soft trousers too. Do not go up a size for a loose feel in a jacket drawn to sit close. More on the measurements in the guide to jacket sizing.

Which fabric holds up?

A set can have a well-drawn silhouette and still fall out of use if the fabric feels thin, stiff or loses its tension. Look for four-way stretch, good recovery and a surface that is comfortable against the skin. A thinner fabric feels cool at high pulse and on warm days but must still cover. A slightly heavier fabric gives structure, suits strength and makes the transition to everyday easier. Flat seams reduce the risk of chafing, and a fabric that returns to its shape keeps the silhouette clean.

Three sets to start with

Goldline Black Sculpting Tights with Goldline Training Jacket is the gym set. The leggings have a sculpting construction, a high sculpted waist and are squat proof. The jacket has fitted gold lines that shape the waist, a gold metallic zip at the front and at the neck, and a hidden inner pocket for keys and cards. Both in ECO Circle, a polyester that is mostly recycled.

Slimline Sculpting Leggings with Slimline Training Jacket is the hourglass set. The leggings have seams that actively lift and shape, the jacket black side panels that create a soft hourglass silhouette from shoulder to hip. The same gold zips, the same hidden inner pocket.

Edge Casual Zip Pants with Edge Casual Zip Sweater is the set that does not look like a workout set. Micro-brushed fabric, straight-cut legs without a cuff, zips on the shoulders. It is the set for the office, the train and dinner, and it wears just as well split: the trousers with a white shirt, the sweater with jeans.

How do you wear the pieces on their own?

A set should not feel like a uniform. The most useful one is where the pieces stand strong alone. The leggings with a loose shirt or a knitted jumper. The jacket over a tank and with everyday trousers. The top under a blazer on the trip. Start with a base colour you know you wear: black, dark grey, navy. Once the base is there, the next set can make more of a statement without rebuilding the wardrobe. More combinations in the guide to styling workout sets.

Do top and bottom have to be the same size?

No. Many choose the same size out of habit, but the body is rarely proportioned to one label. A smaller size in high-waisted leggings and a larger in the jacket, for the shoulders, is a considered choice. Leggings and jacket do different jobs, and the set becomes more balanced when each piece gets its own size. The size guide gives the measurements per style.

All sets are gathered on workout sets. The right set is the one you put on without thinking, and take off only when the day is over.
